Gaudreau's brother was driving, police say

The Columbus Blue Jackets' Johnny Gaudreau is mourning the loss of his brother, Matthew, who was killed in a car crash in New Jersey on Sunday, July 3, 2023. The crash also claimed the life of another passenger, Daniel Fickes.

According to police, Matthew Gaudreau was driving a 2021 Jeep Wrangler when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. Matthew Gaudreau was pronounced dead at the scene. Fickes was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Johnny Gaudreau released a statement through the Blue Jackets expressing his grief over the loss of his brother. "I am heartbroken to announce the passing of my brother, Matthew," Gaudreau said. "Matthew was a loving and caring person who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I ask for privacy during this difficult time." Matthew Gaudreau was 20 years old.

The Blue Jackets also released a statement expressing their condolences to the Gaudreau family. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Matthew Gaudreau," the team said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny and his family during this difficult time." Gaudreau is expected to miss the start of the Blue Jackets' training camp, which begins on September 22.
