Romania Qualifies for Billie Jean King Cup Finals with Comeback Win Over Ukraine
Romania's Comeback
Romania produced an astonishing comeback to beat Ukraine 3-2 and qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the first time. After Ukraine took a 2-0 lead on the opening day, Romania won the final three matches, including a crucial doubles victory in the decisive fifth match.
Ukraine's Early Advantage
Ukraine had started the tie with an advantage, leading 2-0 after wins from Lesia Tsurenko and Elina Svitolina. However, Romania's Sorana Cirstea put her team on the board with a win over Katarzyna Kawa in the third match. Ana Bogdan leveled the tie with a victory over Dayana Yastremska in the fourth match, setting the stage for the decisive doubles encounter.
Decisive Doubles Match
In the doubles match, Romania's Monica Niculescu and Gabriela Ruse proved too strong for the Ukrainian pair of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok. With the 6-2, 6-3 victory, Romania secured their spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, to be held in November 2024.
