Auroral Borealis Activity is Currently Extreme

Auroral borealis activity is currently extreme, and a geomagnetic storm could make the northern lights visible across a large portion of the US this weekend. The aurora may be visible for much of the northern half of the country, including states as far south as Northern California and Alabama. The lights are expected to last into Sunday night.

This is a rare opportunity to see the northern lights from so far south. The last time a geomagnetic storm of this magnitude occurred was in 2015. If you're hoping to see the aurora, be sure to find a dark location with clear skies. The best time to see the lights is typically between 10pm and 2am.

Keep an eye on the skies this weekend for what could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the northern lights.
